APS Leadership Nomination Information

APS offers multiple leadership opportunities to support the Society’s mission, strategy, and programs. Below are the roles currently open for nomination.

APS President-Elect Nomination Information (One Opening)

The APS President-Elect role represents a three-year leadership commitment, progressing from President-Elect to President to Past President. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to help shape APS strategy, programs, and partnerships while advancing the Society’s mission and values.


President-Elect (June 2027–2028)

  • Serves as a member of the APS Executive Council
  • Presides at Council meetings in the absence of the President
  • Participates on the APS PAS Program Committee (President-Elect and President years)
  • Serves on the APS/SPR Board of Directors (throughout the three-year leadership track)
  • Introduces the Siegel Award recipient at the APS Presidential Plenary (PAS)

President (June 2028–2029)

  • Provides overall leadership and strategic direction for APS
  • Presides at the Presidential Plenary and Howland Gala at the PAS Meeting
  • Serves as a member of the APS Executive Council
  • Serves on the Finance Committee (during President and Past President years)
  • Serves as ex-officio member of APS CODIE
  • Continues service on the APS PAS Program Committee
  • Continues service on the APS/SPR Board of Directors
  • Represents APS in external engagements, including:
    • Observer on PPC monthly conference calls
    • APS representative to FOPO (with the APS Secretary/Treasurer)

Past President (June 2029–2030)

  • Serves as a member of the APS Executive Council
  • Continues service on the Finance Committee
  • Chairs the Nominating Committee
  • Chairs the Nichols Award Selection Committee (as needed)
  • Continues service on the APS/SPR Board of Directors

Secretary/Treasurer-Elect (One Opening)

The Secretary/Treasurer-Elect role includes a one-year transition (shadow) period followed by a five-year term as Secretary/Treasurer, supporting APS governance, financial stewardship, and operations.

Secretary/Treasurer-Elect (June 2027–2028)

(Shadow year)

  • Works closely with the current Secretary/Treasurer in preparation for the role
  • Note: This position is not an Officer or Council member during the shadow year

Secretary/Treasurer (June 2028–2033)

  • Oversees APS correspondence and records official meeting proceedings
  • Maintains fiduciary responsibility for all Society funds and securities
  • Partners with the President and Executive Council on strategic planning, implementation, and general APS management

Committee and Representation Roles:

  • Chairs the APS Finance Committee (five-year term, concurrent)
  • Serves on the Avery Award Selection Committee
  • Serves as ex-officio member of APS CODIE
  • Serves on the APS/SPR Board of Directors
  • Represents APS externally, including:
    • APS representative to FOPO (with the APS President)
    • Observer on monthly PPC conference calls
    • APS representative to the PPC Finance Committee (annual budget review)

Additional Information:

  • Membership dues and journal subscription are complimentary during the term

Councilor Positions (Two Open)

Councilors play a vital role in APS governance and engagement.

Councilor (June 2027–2032)

  • Serves a five-year term, beginning June 1

Responsibilities include:

  • Attendance at Summer and Fall Council Meetings
  • Participation in monthly Council calls
  • Active engagement in APS activities, including:
    • Serving on APS committees and task forces
    • Representing APS within partner organizations and initiatives

Nomination Requirements

  • Active APS membership: Nominee must have dues paid and be in good standing
  • Letter of interest: Outlining the nominee’s qualifications (PDF upload)
  • Statement of alignment with APS values: Describing how personal and/or institutional experiences reflect APS values—collaboration, community, compassion, curiosity, equity, and excellence (PDF upload)
  • Abbreviated CV: (PDF upload)

Additional requirement for Officer positions (President-Elect and Secretary/Treasurer-Elect only):

  • Demonstrated prior APS service (e.g., Council, Committee, Representative/Liaison, or Journeys & Frontiers Program Leader)
